The Review
I had such mixed feelings about Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris at the start. We know it is a psychological thriller – that is no secret.
In the beginning, I was so frustrated because in Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris, Jack was written as such a “textbook” psychopath; Nothing he was doing was surprising me, and I was hating Grace for playing right into him so typically.
I was so upset, I even went as far as to tell a friend the book was “formula and trite” (that might be the harshest thing I have ever uttered towards a book!) and conversely, I HAD to keep reading it. I could not put it down.
After really thinking over my opinion about the start of the book I realized Paris was genius in this formula.
Now, I read a fair amount, and I love a good thriller. Psychopaths are my favorite by far. Paris set up such a perfect, textbook psychopath, gives you juuuuuust enough insight to him, and then leaves out the actual details. Just about everything is left to your imagination in Behind Closed Doors. So, if you are like me (have read a lot of thrillers, and have an active imagination) your brain is filling in the rest. I tortured myself so much with all the different possibilities.
My heart was racing.
I was sweaty in my armpits.
I had to put Behind Closed Doors down a few times later in the book to walk away and take a breath. It’s easy for me to get wrapped up in thrillers, but I rarely ever get anxious over them. If I had not been on my nook, I would have put it in the freezer for a time out. Even writing this, I have to breathe deeply.
That being said – THERE ARE STILL THINGS I WANT TO KNOW!!
Bravo, Paris. Bravo.
Trigger warnings:
Emotional abuse. Physical abuse.
There is a dog. A psychopath and a dog. (my book club and I call this “War Horse Shit.”)
What I smoked:
4Rilla Glue by Hygge Farms – Available at Auburn | North Renton | South Renton
Hygge (pronounced HUE-gah) is the Danish concept of comfort and coziness. So much so, that it is actually a defining characteristic of their culture.
I thought starting with something known for comfort might be nice with a book like this. 4Rilla Glue is their version of the classic Gorilla Glue strain, and it lives up to the name. When you first open the jar, this wonderful lemony-pine-stanky scent fills your nose and you know this is going to be good.
Euphoric and headdy, the first hit does go straight to your head. Spinny but not racey, it eventually settles into your body, while keeping it’s uplifting vibes. Perfectly balanced, you are not couch-locked or so antsy that you need to get up and clean your house or something. Mentally stimulating, you are aware enough of you senses you are able to focus on what you are reading.
I smoke flower, but if you prefer prerolls, Hygge has 8 packs available as well!
