I-502

Washington Initiative 502 (I-502) marijuana reform passed in November 2012 by the voters of Washington state. This legalized recreational marijuana and new recreational licenses would be available to business owners.  Recreational sales began on July 8, 2014 for persons over the age of 21. Initiative 502 licenses and regulates marijuana production, distribution, and possession for persons over 21; remove state-law criminal and civil penalties for activities that it authorizes. It taxes marijuana sales and earmarks marijuana-related revenues. The new tightly regulated and licensed system is similar to those used to control alcohol. Washington State’s liquor control board originally set the number of retail outlets at 334, taking into account population, security and safety issues, and discouraging illegal markets. Due to recent legislation which allows current dispensaries to transfer over the number of retail outlets will increase to 556. Recreational stores can sell cannabis in the form of flower, concentrates, edibles and topicals. In addition, under certain guidelines they can sell paraphernalia along with cannabis products.  Individuals twenty-one years of age or older are legally authorized to possess and use one ounce of  marijuana, seven grams of concentrate, sixteen ounces of cannabis infused product in solid form, seventy two ounces of cannabis infused product in liquid form and marijuana related drug paraphernalia.
